As there have been a number of software updates over the past few months is it now possible to switch off the incredibly annoying (and for the intended use) highly confusing suggestions that pop up on the screen. This “feature” has been, and may still be, the buying decision.

Greetings!
Are you referring to the cards? If so, you can adjust the settings so that they only rotate once a day:
1. Say, "Go to settings," or swipe down from the top of the Echo Show screen and select "Settings." 2. Select "Home Screen." 3. Select "Home Card Preferences." 4. Under the "Rotation" section, select either "Rotate Once" or "Rotate Continuously."
Thanks Gabriel. No, not cards. I believe that the screen will show “helpful” suggestions at “random” times. As an example. I want to see the clock and just the clock. I do not want to see anything else. At all. I understand the concept of the cards and I choose what is displayed. What I would like to know is that if I choose to view only the time then NOTHING else will be displayed unless I switch that info on - like “useful” things Alexa is determined to inform me that I can ask Alexa.
the reason I ask is the intent is to use a couple of these units to keep in touch with an ageing mother who does not need to be confused by strange messages appearing suggesting things.

Those can't be turned off completely either at the moment but can be limited to show once a day as well from what I understand. I would advise to submit feedback through the Alexa app or even the device itself.
I just received my Echo Spot and it's December 2018. The Things to Try screen keeps popping up, try this, try that. I want to turn it off. I already know what the echo can or cannot do and I don't want others to see the screen and start trying to do things with it. It allowed me to turn the weather screen on and off, no options to turn off Things to Try. I am on the latest version. Under Home Content, Rotate Continuously is turn off, all content options turned off. Do Not Disturb is on. Privacy settings are all set to max.
Basically I shut down every single option, even options I may otherwise like, trying to turn off this Things to Try screen. If I can't get it to disappear, I'm not turning on any other functions. I bought this item, and should have the control over what appears or doesn't appear on the screens. I am seriously considering returning it.
