Hello I have just bought a Echo Dot 3rd edition and i like it so far but one thing I cannot understand is why when I have it linked up to my mobile phone (Xiaomi redmi note 5 pro global version) that i can play music from my phone to the Echo Dot by bluetooth it will play the music perfectly .. and it will play the notifications (say if a text message comes through or the pop with the facebook messenger that will play too on the speaker) but then I tried dialling 171 voicemail on my phone and the audio was coming through the phones earpiece and not the Echo Dot , so then i pressed the speaker Icon on the mobile phone handset and it just came through the speaker of the phone .. and not through the echo dot speaker - then tried making a call and same thing - it was not being routed to the echo dot by bluetooth. - I wonder what the problem can be? - the Bluetooth connection must be fine because music is playing by bluetooth to the echo dot . Could this be the Xiaomi problem or the echo dot problem? I read somewhere that the echo products support A2DP (or whatever its called) so I should be able to hear phone calls through the echo from the phone through bluetooth shouldnt I? - If I hook up my mobile phone by bluetooth in my car I can hear calls coming through the cars speakers fine.
Essentially the "A2DP" (Advanced Audio Distribution Profile) is for Audio Streaming services. So where the source media is streamed from an internet source.
I don't pretend to know a lot about Bluetooth; it's profiles and software implementations.
However, I think this is not the case for your telephony services on your Smart-phone. Possibly required would be HFP (Hands-free profiles)
Thank you for the replies - i guess I was getting it wrong what the echo dot designs are then and the capability. I was just guessing that seeing that all the sounds that seem to be coming from the paired bluetooth phone I thought every sound would including phone calls , after all it does on my other bluetooth speaker which is just a bog standard bluetooth speaker from Tesco's - i was just hoping to ditch having 2 devices and just have everything on one device my new echo dot .. but if its not capable them all I can do I suppose is wait and see if they implement this feature later on with an update maybe if thats possible . I see they have their own feature of alexa communication whereby you can call someone else who has an alexa account and maybe that is also why they havent implemented the feature of using the echo dot as a bluetooth speakerphone maybe?

The Echo Dot only supports music playback, not voice call support.
Andy,

You can find more info about Bluetooth Profiles and their functions on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Bluetooth_profiles
I don't think you should expect telephony & voice via your Echo Dot.
I suggest check out the functionality of the Echo Connect: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Echo-Connect-Alexa/dp/B06ZZNWTDC/ref=sr_1_3?crid=15NOC9MJETZU1&keywords=echo+connect+uk&qid=1559688225&s=amazon-devices&sprefix=echo+connect%2Camazon-devices%2C163&sr=1-3
