I was led to believe that Google are/have dropped all third party support and are pushing it through their own Google Home devices for privacy reasons? I know they have dropped support for the Apple Watch so I chose to go with the Hive thermostat instead.
I’m gutted about that as really wanted the Nest Thermostat. I spoke spoke to a customer service agent from Google/Nest only two weeks ago and they told me although they are in talks with Amazon they couldn’t rule out the possibility of dropping support for Alexa as it’s such a grey area but they did confirm that any new Nest products would only work on the Google/Nest platform.
One of the "problems" with the current Google / Apple / Amazon "does not play well with others" technology childish pranks is that more and more customers risk being dumped into the "Betamax" rather than "VHS" family. (No idea what the modern version of this is - Andorid v iMac?)
I fear that there could be a dramatic and sudden crash in "3rd party" smart devices and services unless the "big boys" decide that they either get things to play well or lock up their ecosystems and proudly support one service/device and loudly refuse to support it's alternative.
Personally I would feel abused if a service I currently enjoy and used as a reason to buy an Amazon service or product just disappeared. (Just the same if I had a google or other such service or device.) I hope we all - as customers - make our service providers very clear that we want what they promise for LIFE, not just for Christmas!
(Huge advert suggestion - team up with PDSA/RSPCA/Dog Trust and give them 1p for every advert you run with "Alexa - Like a dog - for life, not just for Christmas". )
