Some Fires don't have the capability to run the later version of Android. And as the BBC, according to the email I received, was the one to pull the app from Amazon, I doubt they'd be willing to work with Amazon to support old, out of date devices.
It's just a few keystrokes and taps to open the Web tab, type in bbc.com and read the news there (also the stories aren't as abbreviated)

Fires are not alone there are quite a lot of older tablets/phones that have not had their operating systems updated by the manufactures and cannot run the app anymore.
A bookmarks are the only answer if you have a device that will not run the app.
I too have used the bb c app since I have had my fire, surely it's not beyond Amazon to update the fire to run the new bb c app? Likewise, the bb c can work with Amazon to assist as required. While we wait.. We can dump the fire and get a tablet that does work with the new app or try Metro or the Mail which are both still available... for now.
BBC pulled their outdated / no-longer-supported / basically abandoned app (BBC stopped updating the version in the Amazon appstore years ago)
It is not cost effective, practical, or oft times even possible for Amazon to do an OS update on ancient hardware
For newer Fires, BBC does have an app that works. See my post #13. They, the BBC, for whatever reason(s) have not given it to Amazon. Don't know if they will.
Until then, as has been mentioned (along with reasons why the v2.x of the app was pulled by BBC, not Amazon), visiting BBC.com will provide you with their content...

Fire9.
Yes you make some very valid points and I completely agree with your summary. Amazon have done absolutely nothing to effect a solution to this unfortunately.
The BBC not giving it to Amazon is likely because the software/hardware will not support the new features e.g. Auto-sign in across apps. To do so may require a major code rewrite.
that said, I always use the website on a favourite as I intensely dislike the app on a tablet

Yes, CBR - I thought we have established this by now.

Kelp_hed: there are many posts explaining and showing that this situation had arisen because of direct decisions and actions of the BBC - who are the owners of the apps. I think Amazon may have decided not to issue OS re-writes for old hardware devices in order to support newer apps - I can understand that. The cost and resources required can be considerable and most providers of devices/OS also operate some from of cut-off on older devices.
Of course these older devices do still work, and people are not prevented from accessing the BBC website.
I am not sure what Amazon may or may not have done, or what more they could have done (reasonably or practically), but perhaps they HAVE tried to work together with the BBC and failed to achieve success.
I think it is useful for people experiencing this situation with the BBC app to understand the background to it, rather than immediately jumping to a dissatisfaction or blind acceptance that Amazon are at fault.

I don’t think this contributes to anything I don’t already know. To regard Amazon as being completely blameless over the matter is not the case and their complete lack of action is really unacceptable. Amazon sell the devices and so are obligated to offer their customers the best possible choice. In this case they have failed miserably

The BBC have been ordered to save license payers money and have had to make some drastic changes in order to do this. One of these changes is to stop development of an app that is , quite frankly, unnecessary when you only have to tap in BBC.co.uk into your browser and you get a heck of a lot more information than in the app.
Using Apk Extracter (meher) from PlayStore. Extract the working BBC App from your Android MOBILE PHONE, Email it to your kindle fire and then install it straight from your (downloaded & saved) email. Works on my S5 mini / Amazon Fire 7th Generation 7 inch. Same technique works on some other apps as well. Best regards Mal - Sunny Scunny.

Your S5 Mini is running Lollipop, correct? I ask because that is the Android version on the current Fire tablets. Good chance your extracted APK will not work on older Fires - also, if your phone would have a newer version of Android there stands a good chance of the extracted APK not working as well.
Proceed with caution...
(BTW, I use APK Export from Area 51bis)
