I've recently purchased a Fire HD 10 and I am trying to set up a profile for my 10 year old.
When I log on under her name the tablet is so restricted it is virtually useless. It just shows four sections - Recent, Character & Themes, Web Videos and Websites. I can only play the small web videos on offer or visit the pre-defined websites.
How is she supposed to access music and video content on the SD card? When I set up the child profile I clicked on Apps to make some available to her but the list was empty. I can't seem to add Youtube, mxplayer, iPlayer. There's no access to a web browser so that she can access school sites.
I know I must be missing something as I set up the tablet for someone over 9 years of age but all I'm getting so far is some kind of locked down Vtech Kids play tablet ?
Let's start by checking if the Fire for Kids web browser is enabled.
From your child's profile, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Settings (gear) icon.
Scroll down to Web Settings, and then tap the switch next to Enable Web Browser to enable or disable the web browser.
Once the browser is enabled, you can grant permission for specific websites by following these steps:
Swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings, then tap Profiles & Family Library and tap your child’s profile. Or, from within your child's profile, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap Settings, then enter your lock screen password.
Tap Add Content and select Websites in the pop-up dialog.
To add a website, enter a URL to navigate to the website you want to add to your child’s profile. Then tap Allow to add the website to your child’s web browser. Tap Done when complete or Next to add another website.
Note: Your permission operates at a domain level; for example, if you allow disney.com, your child will have access to games.disney.com, video.disney.com, music.disney.com and all other webpages under the disney.com domain.
Regarding apps, follow these steps to add content:
Open the Fire for Kids app, then select the Settings (gear) icon next to your child's profile. Or, from the home screen, swipe down from the top of the screen and tap the Settings (gear) icon, tap Profiles & Family Library and tap your child's profile.
Tap Add Content and then tap Share Content in the pop-up dialog. Tap Kid-Friendly to view recommended family-friendly titles in your library. You can also tap a content library (for example, Books) to view and select individual titles on your own.
To add content, tap each title you want to add to your child's profile. To remove content, tap the title you want to remove to uncheck it. Tap Done when complete.
Fire for Kids web browser is enabled. When I try to add "www.google.com" for example, it says the website is not supported in Fire for Kids? My daughter needs to use the tablet in school some days and they search for things on the internet with the teacher and then go to the linked web pages. If I need to allow every website individually in advance then how can she go to these new web pages in school?
Permitting access to a search engine would allow your child to see the search engine’s homepage, but would not let your child follow the overwhelming majority of links returned by a search. Search results may also include inappropriate content. For these reasons, Fire for Kids web browser does not permit access to Google, Bing, Yahoo or other popular search engines.
