I have just purchased a Fire 10 HD tablet for my daughter. I use Google Family across her other Android devices for security. Although I can set the Fire tablet up so that it recognises her Google account I can't get it to work with Family Link. It says it is installing it but then loops back to saying it needs installing.
Amazon support say that this isn't supported and they don't know when the problem will be fixed. I find this hard to believe as both the tablet and the Google Family application have both been around for some time.
I have just found this forum and wondered if anyone on here had any suggestions as to how to fix this?
Google is NOT Amazon. Indeed, they are direct competitors. I thought this was generally known :(
The way to fix it is to return your Fire 10 HD tablet for a full refund and buy any Android tablet that you choose that is Android based and hosts Google stuff. (Amazon Fire tablets are NOT Android and do not link to the Google Play Store or host the millions of Google Play Store apps.)
Honestly - it's like buying a gas cooker and then wondering why it will not work when connected to an electric supply.
I'm sorry that no one has explained this to you clearly enough before. I trust you get your full refund quickly and that you find a price/cost/performance comparable device.
(Use the HELP link at the bottom of most Amazon web pages, follow the rabbit hole on the help options and get to talk to an amazon help bunny. They will issue you a return label and return number and prepare you for a full refund on your device. i SUGGEST using a local drop-box or other return service to get a return receipt for peace of mind.)
What a truly unhelpful response, CombatWombat! A troll maybe?
Of course Google is not Amazon, but just because they are competitors doesn't mean Google's apps won't work on an Amazon device.
I have had my own Fire 10 HD tablet for some time and I haven't until know found a Google application that I can't run on it. I'm happily running Google Play Store, Google Chrome, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Maps, Google Trips (sadly, not for much longer) and Gmail.
To say that "Amazon Fire tablets are NOT Android" is completely wrong. To quote Amazon...
"Fire OS is the operating system that runs Amazon's Fire TV and tablets. Fire OS is a fork of Android, so if your app runs on Android, it will most likely run on Amazon's Fire devices too."
Strange as this may sound, they do appear to be able to run many, many Android apps.
Anyway, if no one comes up with any suggestions I'll set up another Google account for my daughter and use some other way of securing the Fire tablet. I'm sure either Amazon's or a third party app will do the trick. It's just a shame she won't have access to her own Google account from the Fire tablet. There will be work arounds to this in some areas, but probably not all.
While writing this, I've just had another response to my original contact with Amazon. I'm not going to hold my breath, but there is a possibility that Amazon might start supporting the use of Google Family Link.
