@CoralB: To answer your question as you have presented it:
The Firestick has various built in "channels" such as PRIME to allow you to watch porgrams - you have to subscribe to things like PRIME - something like £7.99 a month I think. This lets you watch many "PRIME free films, TV shows and series."
You may also download other PAY channels. I can not remember them, things like NETFLIX, etc. Each of these are also subscription channels and you have to pay so much a month.
Please be caseful. Most of these services offer a free "introduction" for a few weeks but, As others note, if you fail to cancel them you can soon end up paying many subscriptions and quite a lot of money a month.
In addition, you can click on "Apps" or Applications such as BBC Iplayer, More4, ITVHub and similar - these are FREE channels to watch normal BBC, ITV services but at different times and different ways - such as a complete series of a popular series.
Please Note - You may want to check - I think these services are FREE but you still must have a valid TV licence to access them.
Finally - Most Television/Films can be watched in 3 ways:
1 - Watch Now - The film, say, is played there and then on your TV.
This is usually the most convenient way to watch and has the huge benefit of haveing a PAUSE button so you can get a drink or visit the bathroom or answer the phone at your convenience.
2 - DOWNLOAD AND WATCH LATER - this slowly downloads to your tablet or stick and is watchable by you at a time convenient to you, rather like watching a tape or dvd in your own home. You may only be able to download a few programs since they fill up your stick or tablet until you delete them after watching.
3 - You can just click the TITLE and add it to your WATCHLIST. This simply adds the title to your convenient watchlist - rather like putting a circle around your TV TImes listing of a program. It does not download anything and is just a memory jogger.
Go to your WATCHLIST and select a title to watch (or download it that option is available.)
It sounds complex but gets a lot easier with practice. The hardest part to get used to is seeing the little box or mark or colour bar moving across your options so that you can easily select them.
I hope the above helps.

The 3 solutions seem to be RESET / RESTORE FACTORY DEFAULTS / CHECK YOUR REGION. What was the question again? 14 (Yes 14!) accounts supporting my posts for accuracy and help! The ONLY Wombat given a biscuit for great advice! Woohoo!

Have a new fire stick and want to view a free download
options are to watch via free 30 day trial of Prime or download to watchlist
down load to watch list and then access watchlist, cannot then find a way to watch the content- what am I missing please?
Hi Coralb,
Not sure you can expect any free content. However, I suggest you read the help on how to use your new Fire Stick device.

I am not aware of any free content unless you are already a subscriber to Prime, or netflix or similar.
Maybe the BBC iPlayer is accessible?
OR you could try the free trial of PRIME but be sure to cancel before the 30 days is up or you would be charged a first year subscription.

Disappointed when I see "answers" that seem to have been posted purely to wind-up others or to create conflict, rather than to actually help anyone.
