Hello argyllandy,
Welcome to the digital and device forum!
I am sorry you are having this issue with your Fire TV Sticks.
Restart your device. Disconnect the power cord from the back of the device or from the power outlet, and then plug it back in.
Make sure that you are using the power supply provided with your Fire TV device. Connect the included power adapter into the power port on the back of your Fire TV device, then plug the other end into a power outlet.
For Amazon Fire TV (1st and 2nd Generation), make sure that you are using a High Speed HDMI cable, if needed. The cable should say "High Speed", "1.3", or "1.4" on it. Plug one end of your HDMI cable into the HDMI port on the back of your Amazon Fire TV, then plug the other end into an available HDMI port on your TV. For FIre TV Stick, make sure that you use the included HDMI extender.
If you are using an HDMI hub, disconnect your Fire TV device from the hub and try plugging it directly into the TV.
Try switching to a different HDMI port on your television. Remember which HDMI port you used to connect your Fire TV device and switch to the corresponding input channel on your TV.
Tip:
If your Fire TV device remains on the logo screen during setup, wait at least 10 minutes for the device to finish loading. If your Amazon Fire TV (1st or 2nd Generation) is still slow to start after initial setup, make sure you are using a High Speed HDMI cable.
If your Fire TV device turned off while you were using it or after installing a software update, leave your Fire TV device unplugged until it has cooled down.
tried all that, left them plugged in for an hour, checked wires with a 3rd firestick and they all worked, tried all the button presses and will not do a thing and the other wont pair with the remote.

Thanks for the Update argyllandy!
If you have a moment please try following steps to pair your remote with the Fire TV Stick:
Press and hold the Home button on the remote for 10 seconds. The remote should pair with the device within one minute.
If that doesn’t work, unplug the power adapter from the Fire TV device or from the wall outlet.
While the Fire TV device is off, reset the Fire TV remote by pressing the Menu button, Backbutton, and the left side of the navigation ring at the same time. Hold all of these buttons for 10 seconds.
Note: This step will not factory reset the Fire TV device. It removes Fire TV settings from the remote.
Remove the batteries from the Fire TV remote and plug in the Fire TV device. Wait for the Home screen to appear.
Put the batteries back in the Fire TV remote and wait for one minute.
Note: Make sure that the batteries are inserted correctly. Both "positives" must point up toward the top of the remote, even if the battery insertion markings show something else. For more information, go to Amazon Fire TV Remote Basics.
If the remote still hasn’t paired, press and hold the Home button on the remote for 10 seconds
no it wont do anything, just sits on the home is currently unavailable screen then clicks over to screensaver . i think firesticks could do with the reset pinhole.
