I have just bought 2 new Fire TV Stick 4k Ultra's because the specification said that these now have hardware transcoding of 1080i streams. Unfortunately this appears not to be the case as when streaming such content using Plex / Emby and even the dreaded Kodi, the video will randomly freeze with the audio continuing for a few seconds before whole stick freezes. The only way to recover is to reboot.
The stick is powered using the supplied USB plug and cable..
I have tried both sticks and they both do the same. For comparison I don't have any issues with my old Fire TV generation 2 of Fire stick generation 2, but I did have the same issue with Fire TV generation 3 (the pendant one). I have read on forums that this is a known issue, something to do with the way the 1080i streams are encoded in the UK and Europe as is supposed to have been "fixed" with a software update which again does not seem to be the case as both sticks have updated to Fire OS NS6264/1996. Is anybody else having the same issue and if so have you found a workaround?
No none of the videos use HDR as far as I can tell. They are HD recordings I stream from my Humax Foxsat box which are in .ts format and 1080i that I used to be able to watch on my older Fire TV stick (so i can watch programmes I have recorded on the Humax box, which is in the lounge, in another room). This used to work a treat.
It looks like I am going to have to return these for a refund :(
