Just bought fatherinlaw a new kindle and although i specified which kindle to download specific books to, amazon has just sent everything to both his and mine kindles. Not sure he'd appreciate my taste in SF!
of his kindle is registered to your account and he has his setting set to All, not Downloaded, he will see links to every book owned by your account. He needs to switch to Downloaded and he will see just what's on his device
Cheers for that, but i also have a load of pdf's to put on his kindle. If i select downloaded only, he wont be able to see them. Is there a way on my account i can stop my books from being downloaded to his kindle?

The books are only downloaded to one device unless you send them to more, however by having it set to all you both can see all the books.
With pdf you have to look in docs rather than books but they will still be in downloaded so long as you have sent them to his Kindle, He may not thank you for pdf however as they are often difficult to read.

dont think this is right. I only selected one device to download to and yet there they are on both units. Looking at my account at devices and content, it only shows the books ive bought for him associated with his kindle and yet my books are also on his. Annoying. As regards PDFs' selecting 'all' would make them visible (or it does on mine) meaning i cant just select downloaded for the books ive bought him. Why is nothing simple.

I have just checked on my paperwhite, if I select downloaded I only see those on the device, if I then select "all items" from the second drop down from the right I only see the items downloaded on my device (all of them books & pdfs) with mine it shows a number in brackets next to all items. You can then check by switching from "downloaded" to "all" (the option to the left) you then see everything on the cloud or on the device. There will then be a new, bigger, number to the right of where it says "all items".
It would be to your advantage to spend a while reading through the user guide that is on your device to answer all your questions, and so get the best out of it.

and then what would be the point of forums?? Usually at this point i would say unless you have anything useful to add then dont bother.

Ok, i see. I'll have a play and see whats best, thanks.
Although ive just heard from amazon (and despite the different contents quite obviously being separate on my account) both kindles will see everything unless i create a separate account for the fatherinlaws. Quote " Unfortunately, it is not possible to stop from sharing contents to all the devices.

They are right from the point that everything can be seen from the cloud, also either kindle can use your account.
Remember if you set up a separate account you will need to deregister the existing account on his and it will lose all the downloaded content. You will be able to email pdf files to his new account so long as he sets up his account to permit emails from you BUT you will not be able to transfer any books you have bought from Amazon with the original account.

Now i understand where youre coming from, this may be the solution. If i keep DOWNLOADED selected on his and i then email the pdf's as you suggested then yes that would possibly work. My original intention was to usb them hence the need for ALL being selected. Tbh, the email route hadnt even occured to me. Off to give it a try.

If you set his up this wya
All | Downloaded (highlighted) ___ All Items ___ Collections (or other sort method)
he will still see USB transferred books - you may be confusing the first All (list of links to items stored on the account) with All items (Books purchased from Amazon and items from other sources)
@Clanky: You have posted on an open customer-2-customer forum and asked a question that is readily understood by reading the User Guide that comes pre-installed on the kindle devices.
You may expect people to offer their opinion. You may not agree with their opinions just as they may not agree with yours.
If you wish to take exception to them that is, again, totally your right. However that does not make you right, correct or holier than thou ;(
The User Guide on the current Paperwhite takes about 12 minutes to read. The examples and use possibly takes a little more. It is unfortunate that your reading of the guide apparently did not solve your issues. Regards, CW.

I wonder why someone would follow their own alternative forum profile.
@Clanky: regardless of "winning" pointless internet battles, please, please PLEASE read though the Paperwhite User Guide - it is really very very good at explaining how to get the most out of your device and your account. it has loads of hints, tips, guides and examples on how to maximise the pleasure you get out of this system. Regards, Cw.

Then you would find out about setting the main screen up with views. Which would answer every question you have about it. And how the device works.
