Thanks for your reply. To my knowledge I only have the one account but have now discovered a multitude of other devices I was unaware I had on here!! with no idea which is my current mobile phone for instance i cannot decide which to delete hmm. Meantime I have made my kindle my default which I would have thought it would already have been but other than that is there some other sort of verification I need to do? Feel like a luddite trying to get my head round everything.
I can see my list of books and the ones I chose and put into "My Library" are showing with the Prime logo against them. Just an't see any way of getting them onto the Kindle to read? I am accessing this info via laptop as i have the old style kindle too so no way to access my account, just the shop.
if your old style kindle is correctly registered to your account, you should see your books in the Archives/Cloud tab/All tab. If you're saying it cannot connect to download books, check here and apply the proper updates (one at a time if there's more than one needed):
the Updates page will tell you how to figure out what OS you have and there will be a linking telling you how to download the update and then manually update your device. You can also use the transfer via usb method (includes a video):

Open the Kindle app on your phone, open settings > There you will find your "Device Name". Match it to the device in Manage Your Content and Devices, then rename it to something easy to remember. You can deregister any other devices you no longer have...
